Description

Gardener's Cottage, located about 350 meters southeast of Shadwell Park, is a gardener's bothy built around 1840, possibly designed by Edward Blore. The building is constructed of plastered clay lump and originally featured a thatched roof, which has since been destroyed by fire. It has gabled ends and gault brick stacks with chamfered shafts and moulded caps and bases, the bases adorned with arms, reflecting a Tudor style.

The cottage has an L-shaped plan with a principal room in each wing and a kitchen in the angle. It stands two storeys tall with asymmetrical elevations, featuring a gabled wing on either the left or right side. The windows are a mix of one, two, and three-light designs, showcasing 4-centred arch lights with metal lattice casements. Notably, on the south gable, there is a canted wooden oriel supported by large brackets, also with lattice casements. The southwest angle includes a 20th-century wooden boarded porch with a corrugated iron sheet roof, while the east side has an outshut with another 20th-century wooden porch in the angle.

Inside, much of the original joinery remains intact on the ground floor, including panelled doors, architraves, and cupboards. In the northwest room, there is a carved wooden chimney piece. However, the roof structure has been destroyed.
