Description
Nunnery Place is a ruin located approximately 10 metres south-east of The Nunnery in Thetford. This site is the remains of St George's Nunnery, which was part of a Benedictine convent, possibly serving as a hospital, founded around 1160. The remaining structures are late medieval, with alterations made in the 17th century. The building is constructed from clunch, limestone, and flint, featuring ashlar and some brick dressings, with a significant amount of re-used ashlar. The structure has no roof and is laid out in a rectangular plan with a narrower extension to the north. Originally two storeys tall, it is now one storey. The west side has stepped buttresses, while the north extension features two blocked four-light stone mullioned windows and a late medieval doorway with a four-centred arch and hoodmould. The east facade contains several blocked openings, including two doorways and a chamfered plinth.
