Description

The Nunnery Gateway is a gateway to the precinct of the Benedictine nunnery of St George, dating from around 1600. It is constructed of red brick. The western face features a rounded archway set within square spandrels that are formed from hollow-moulded field. There are plain responds on either side of the arch, with tapering pilasters on the right and left that rise to support a plain frieze. The eastern face has a plain field that also contains a round arch, and there is a moulded stone string course at the level of the responds.
