Description
Tudor Rose Cottage is a house dating from around 1500, which was altered and refronted in 1738. The cottage is timber framed with rendered wattle and daub infill and has a thatched roof. It features a through passage plan and stands two storeys high on a brick plinth. The central door is flanked by one 18th-century casement window on each side, with the left window having been renewed. There are two similar windows on the first floor, all featuring glazing bars. A central date plaque in plaster displays the inscription 17 IEL 38, which refers to Joseph and Elizabeth Lucas. The roof is cabled with an internal stack on the west side. To the left of the rear elevation, there is an 18th-century gabled extension with a pantiled roof. A door to the right is next to a one-light window, and there is a 20th-century window further right, below the 18th-century casement. The east gable has a drip shelf at the eaves line, below a blocked attic light. Inside, the framing at the first floor is made of heavy scantling, while most of the other timbers are boxed or covered. There is curved bracing at the corners, and the roof structure includes tie beams, collars, clasped purlins, and windbracing in each bay.
