Description
Kempstone Lodge is a farmhouse built in the late 18th century, with an early 19th-century addition. The main block is constructed of gault brick, while the addition is made of colourwashed brick, both topped with black pantiled roofs. The main block is slightly recessed on both facades compared to the lower pedimented flanking wings, and there is an adjoining early 19th-century block on the side.
The building has two storeys and a three-bay main block with single bay wings. The entrance facade features a central pedimented porch supported by a pair of columns, with glazed doors. This is flanked by tripartite sash windows with glazing bars set beneath segmental relieving arches. Other windows include sashes with glazing bars beneath skewback arches, and there is a pair of French windows in the southwest wing. Notably, there is one surviving acroterion in the form of an Egyptian pylon at the northeast angle of the southwest wing.
On the garden facade, there are three pairs of French windows with jalousie shutters beneath skewback arches in the main block, along with other sash windows with glazing bars beneath skewback arches. Both facades feature plain platbands and moulded brick cornices on the side wing pediments and the main block eaves. A pedimented stair outshut on the southwest side has a large semicircular headed window with glazing bars and some coloured glass. The main block has a hipped roof, while the side addition has two storeys and three bays of sash windows with glazing bars, projecting eaves with brackets, and a hipped roof.
Inside, the staircase in the original house has shaped tread ends, square-sectioned balusters, and a swept mahogany handrail.
