Description

The Church of St Mary is a parish church dating from the 13th to 15th centuries. It is constructed of flint with ashlar dressings, and has slate and lead roofs. The church comprises a west tower, a four-bay aisled nave with a north porch, and a chancel.

The west tower, originally 13th century, was heightened in the 15th century and features diagonal buttresses. It has a two-light Y-traceried west window and former bell openings. The 15th-century bell stage has two-light Perpendicular openings, a crenellated parapet, and an octagonal spire of 1873 with banded slate covering. The nave dates to the 14th century and was also heightened in the 15th century. Moulded doorways with filletted rolls are located on the north and south sides. There are eight aisle windows, blocked to the southwest, each of two lights in the Decorated style with a central soufflet filled with a pair of mouchettes and a dagger. The eastern aisle windows are of three lights in a similar style with three soufflets. Six former quatrefoil clerestory windows have been replaced by 3-light Perpendicular windows with 4-centred arches. A similar window is present in the east gable. The chancel is also 14th century and contains a very fine 5-light reticulated east window, along with three contemporary 2-light windows on the sides (two to the north), a Priest's door, and the remains of a former vestry to the south. A 14th-century north porch features diagonal buttresses and chequered flushwork on the facade, with a moulded entrance arch and filletted half-shafts.

Inside, the small 13th-century tower arch has a roofline indicating a former church above. The nave has 14th-century filletted quatrefoil piers with polygonal capitals and bases. The nave and north aisle have 15th-century hammerbeam roofs with carved figures beneath nodding ogees on wall posts, supported by angels bearing shields. Further details include arched wall braces, intermediate hammers with carved figures above windows, and traceried spandrels. Aisle chapels have piscinas and two complete parclose screens with intricate tracery and crocketted ogee arches to the north. A 15th-century chancel screen has remains of painted dado panels. A 14th-century chancel arch is also present. The chancel has a 2-bay 17th-century arch-braced roof with wind bracing. A complete set of in situ 15th-century nave benches remain, featuring carved poppy heads, armrests, and traceried backs. A blind arcading to the front bench has flamboyant tracery. Western benches have been splayed out to accommodate a plain 14th-century octagonal font on its original pedestal, with a contemporary conical cover with crocketted angles. A painted quatrefoil is above the tower arch, along with painted consecration crosses and 17th-century painted strapwork volutes. Several surviving medieval floor tiles are found in the aisles and on the font pedestal. Fragments of medieval stained glass are present in the east window. A pulpit dates to 1592.
