Description
The Church of All Saints is a parish church located in Great Fransham, with origins in the medieval period and later modifications. It is constructed of flint with ashlar dressings, featuring a rendered chancel and slate roofs. The building includes a west tower, a nave with a north porch, and a former south aisle and chancel.
The west tower, dating from the late 13th century to early 14th century, has Y-traceried bell openings, diagonal buttresses, and quatrefoil sound holes. It is topped by a short leaded spire. The modern south wall contains four 2-light traceried windows, while the north side features two 3-light windows in the Perpendicular style from the 19th century. A distinctive Victorian 3-light east window showcases lozenge reticulation, and there are no other openings in the chancel.
The church has a 14th-century moulded north doorway with dying mouldings and fragments of chequer flushwork on the porch. Inside, there is a 4-bay 14th-century south arcade with columns, bell capitals, tall octagonal bases, and 4-centred arches that are hollow-chamfered and wave-moulded. The tower arch has a wave-moulded inner order supported by carved corbels. The chancel arch has been rebuilt but retains original 14th-century semicircular responds with three fillets per shaft and tall polygonal bases. Additionally, there is a 15th-century octagonal font adorned with shields, bust bowl corbels, and a blind arcaded stem.
