Description
The Black Horse Public House is a mid-18th century establishment located on Magdalen Street in Thetford. It is constructed from plastered and colourwashed flint, clunch, and brick, topped with roofs made of black-glazed pantiles. The building has an L-shaped plan, with a rear section extending southeast down Melford Bridge Road.
The facade features two storeys and is divided into three bays. The central entrance consists of a six-panelled door beneath a narrow three-vaned fanlight and is topped with an open pediment supported by consoles. To the left, there is a 19th-century canted bay window, while to the right, a two-light 19th-century cross casement window can be found. On the first floor, there are three two-light casement windows from the 19th century. The eaves cornice is dentilated and sits under a gabled roof, with internal stacks at the gable ends. The rear wing has 20th-century details on the ground floor and features three two-light casement windows on the first floor, with the roof hipped to the southeast.
Inside, the pub showcases a Brewers' Tudor style, with the ground-floor rooms opened into one another and boxed bridging beams present.
