Description
Harbord's Almshouses comprise a set of six almshouses dating to 1680, with a 19th-century restoration and mid-20th century additions to the rear. The construction is primarily whitewashed flint and brick, with red brick dressings, and the building is roofed with pantiles. The almshouses are arranged over a single storey, featuring six plank doors within whitewashed brick surrounds. Each house originally had a three-light casement window, although these are now mainly 19th century. The gabled roof is punctuated by four rebuilt brick stacks. A prominent feature is the south-west gable, displaying diaper patterning and a set-off at the eaves line. The rear of the building features mid-20th century continuous outshuts constructed from yellow brick. The interior has not been inspected. According to Crosby’s history of Thetford, these almshouses were built in 1680.
