Description
The Former Corn Exchange, built in 1857, is a red brick structure with a slate roof, part of which features glazing. The front is plastered and adorned with six Corinthian columns, topped by a high parapet that includes a central arch in the attic. This arch was once crowned by a figure of Coke struck by lightning, which has since been removed. The building was designed by architects J and M W Goggs from Swaffham. It has pilasters on the north side and an arched panel on the west, set above a rusticated base. The Former Corn Exchange is part of a group with Nos 3 to 8 Market Place and also forms a group with the Red Lion Hotel on Red Lion Street, as well as Nos 1 to 15 (odd) and No 23 and Nos 29 and 31 Quebec Street.
