Description
New Saint Lawrence Church, built in 1778 by Nicholas Revett for Sir Lyonel Lyde, is a Grade I listed church in the Grecian Revival style. The building features painted stucco on red brick, with a Portland stone stylobate and dressings. Its design includes a tetrastyle Doric order temple front, connected to small square open-pedimented pavilions by screens with two-column openings. The large and small columns have revealed fluting at the tops and bottoms of their shafts. Inside, there is a square coffered portico ceiling and a prominent door surround with pilasters in antis that encloses a smaller surround and eight-panel double doors. The interior follows a Greek-cross plan, with continuous pilasters below the windows that transition to an Ionic screen in the west vestibule. The nave ceiling is coffered with nine panels, while the east end features a coffered semidome and square recesses. The original organ is located in the south transept, and there is a font in the portico along with funerary urns in the pavilions.
