Description
Numbers 2 and 4, which comprise The Chaplains House and flats 1, 2, 3, 4 (The Gate House) and 5, are located in Old Hatfield. This building was formerly known as The Salisbury Arms Hotel and dates back to the mid-18th century, with late 18th century or early 19th century additions on the left and right shallow end projections. The central section features chequered red brick, while the ends are made of plain brick.
The facade includes four flush sash windows in the central section and eight in total, all framed with architraves. The central part of the building is two storeys high, topped with a low parapet and three box dormers. There is a central door that has a semicircular radiating fanlight, surrounded by a Roman Doric pilaster and a dentil cornice. A stucco floor band and cornice band run across the building, with the cornice continuing onto the end bays, which feature attic windows set in tall parapets and segmental-headed relieving arches at the ground floor.
Additionally, there is a 20th-century two-storey extension on the western end, which includes an early 19th-century crenellated wall with a gauged brick coach entrance.
