Description
The Woolmer Green War Memorial, located in the churchyard of St Michael’s and All Angels, was designed by Laurence A Turner, who was an architectural sculptor, carver, modeller, and architect.
Constructed from Bramley Fall Stone, the memorial features a Latin Cross atop a tall, round, tapering column with an octagonal base. This column stands on a square plinth, which is positioned at the center of a three-stepped base. The plinth has recessed plaques on each side; three of these plaques list the 11 names of those who died in the First World War, while the fourth bears the inscription: "IN PROUD MEMORY OF THE GALLANT MEN FROM THIS VILLAGE WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919." Additionally, the dates 1939-1945 are inscribed on the face of the top step, and a long plaque attached to the face of the next step down lists the names of those who died in the Second World War.
