Description

Morton House is an early to mid-18th century building, formerly known as Nos 3 and 3A, which was improved for Mr. F W Speaight by A Winter Rose around 1911. The house features timber frame construction, with a possibly earlier rear range. The front is made of red brick and has seven flush sash windows with thick glazing bars set in moulded frames, three of which are on a slightly recessed right-hand portion. The building has a parapet and four box dormers, and it stands two storeys tall with attics. The windows have gauged brick lintels, and there are two stuccoed floor bands.

The left-hand portion of the house has an impressive central doorcase, likely a replacement, with added reveals and intricately carved scrolled brackets supporting a flat hood. It also features an Adam style fanlight and a flush panel door. The right-hand portion has a tall door surround with a half-glazed door, probably dating from 1911. The basement windows are adorned with 18th-century wrought iron grills.

Inside, there is a large staircase hall on the left side of the ground floor, and the staircase is likely taken from another location. The walls display exposed timber framing. The front right room features a bolection-moulded fireplace surround and an overmantel with a segmental pediment supported by winged cupids, as noted by Mervyn Macartney in "Recent English Domestic Architecture."
