Description

The Baptist Tabernacle is a large brick Gothic chapel built in 1887. It features a cross-plan layout with a gabled front and transepts. The design includes two conical roofed turrets positioned on spare bases between the nave roof and the lower transept roofs. The eaves are overhanging and supported by brackets. The chapel has triple lancet windows set within a pointed arched recess, which is topped with a hood mould. The main front recess extends to the ground and is decorated with stamped brick panels, with three segment-headed windows on the ground floor. This main recess is flanked by buttresses and has a narrow light in a pointed arched recess on either side. There are outer porches, each with a separate roof, located at the angle between the nave and chancel, which embrace the bases of the towers. The roofs of the porches are hipped and align with the main roofs above.
