Description

The main block at Watford Central Primary School is an 1884 brick board school. It features a central two-storey main block topped with a steep hipped slate roof, which has bargeboarded gablets and a central timber and copper fleche. A cable runs to the centre front of the building. The façade includes a five-window range, with moulded brickwork at the eaves and gable, long corbels, and moulded brick cornices between the floors. Most windows are plate glass casements with fixed top-lights that have glazing bars. The window heads are cambered and feature fluted keystones. A broad band of pressed brick decoration runs between the floors, with "Higher Elementary Schools" incised into it. There are buttresses between the windows that have stone set-offs, and a narrow string course at the springing level of the upper window heads. The central first-floor window is flat-headed with a stone tympanum above, set in a Gothic moulded brick arch that rises into the gable. The central doorway is also Gothic and moulded, with a deep-set door. Flanking the main block are one-storey wings, with three windows on the west side and four on the east side, featuring triple windows under stone lintels. The outer sections of the wings are gabled, with moulded Gothic arches over the windows and small Gothic lunettes above the lintels, positioned over the central light.
