Description
No. 137 High Street is an early 18th century painted brick house, which is a rebuilding of part of a 17th century timber-framed house. The remaining part of the original structure can be found at the rear and in No. 139. The front range of the building is two stories high with a hipped plain tile roof. It features three windows on the first floor, with a blank center and exposed box sashes on either side. The window surrounds are made of gauged brick with flat heads, and the center window has serpentine curves incised into the leading edge of the bricks. There is a moulded wood box cornice above. The ground floor has been modernized. The early 17th century rear range is rendered and has one sash window. Inside, there is a fireplace and a painted armorial panel dated 1614, which is now housed in St Albans and Watford Museums. Some additional 17th century painted floral decoration can still be seen, along with a 17th century staircase leading to the attic.
