Description
No 73 High Street is a bank building dating from around 1905. It features a single-storey banking hall with offices at the rear. The design is a sophisticated Baroque Revival style that creates a monumental appearance despite the building's small size and narrow site. The front of the building is faced with horizontal grooved Portland ashlar. It has a triumphal arch entrance with Roman Ionic engaged columns on pedestals and an archivolt arched doorway. Above the window and doorheads are richly carved festoons. The entablature includes a panelled parapet with a central section of balustrading.
Rising behind this is the centerpiece of the banking hall, built in stone and designed on a Greek cross plan. It features very shallow, pedimented breaks on each front and a bulbous-based, lead-clad, shallow saucer dome topped with a vase finial. The exposed side elevation below the pedimented attic is faced in brick and has a stone architrave window with a cartouche keystone and elongated shallow consoles that support a moulded cornice. The plain brick office range at the rear has Portland stone coping at the wall head, continuing from the Greek cross centerpiece.
