Description

The Mrs Elizabeth Fuller Free School is a notable school building from 1704, constructed of brick with red brick and stone dressings. It stands two storeys high with an attic and features a plain tile hipped roof topped by a six-sided cupola with a lead dome, along with two hipped dormers. The facade is regular, with a three-window range, and the central section projects slightly forward, adorned with a pediment. A wood dentil eaves cornice and stone quoins accentuate the central bay and outer corners. A stone band runs across the building, and the central doorcase is made of stone, featuring a moulded architrave and an enriched segmental pediment supported by brackets. Below the pediment, there is an inscription dedicated to Mrs Fuller. The entrance consists of ten-panel double doors. The large round-headed windows have gauged brick arches, wooden Y-tracery, and leaded lights. An oval keyed window is located in the pediment, with an ornamental stucco scroll beneath it displaying "MDCCIV" in raised letters. Inside, there is a large ground floor room with a panelled dado and original panelling featuring a pilastered arcade motif on the east wall. A fine fireplace surround from around 1600 is present, flanked by Ionic pilasters and two oval panels in the overmantel.
