Description

The Sikh Community Centre, formerly known as Watford County Court House, is a building dating from around 1858. It features red brick facades laid in Flemish bond, with blue brick and Portland stone dressings, while the side and rear elevations are made of stock brick. The roofs are concealed by parapets, and there are red brick stacks.

The building has a front range that includes entrances, offices, and a main staircase, with the courtroom located at the center and the judge's chamber and court clerk's room at the back. The design is in a classical style, and the exterior is two storeys high. The west front facing Lady's Close is symmetrical with a 1:2:1:2:1 bay arrangement, where the center and end bays project forward. It features a stone modillion cornice, a blocking course, and a moulded stone band and plinth moulding.

On the ground floor, there are round arch windows and doorways with blue brick dressings, stone voussoirs, and imposts. The doorways in the center and end bays have panelled pilasters with carved capitals and semi-circular fanlights; the panelled doors on the right remain, while the others are blocked. The ground floor also has sash windows with margin panes. The first floor contains 12-pane sashes set in moulded brick architraves with small keystones and stone cills, with the center window in a moulded stone eared architrave featuring a panelled apron.

The entrance block facing King Close is a single storey with three bays, featuring a central doorway similar to those at the front, flanked by large round arch windows. Above these are two stone arch lights with a central colonette and large keystones, leading into a brick dentilled stone cornice with a blocking course and large Royal Arms at the center.

Inside, the courtroom has walls with a large blind arcade, panelled doors with moulded architraves, and a lantern concealed by a 20th-century suspended ceiling. The open-well main staircase features stick balusters and a mahogany handrail, while secondary stairs have a wreathed handrail. The jurors' room is located at the front on the first floor and has console brackets supporting the ceiling beams.
