Description
The Palace Theatre, built in 1908 by W A Theobald, features a red brick and Bath stone front that was added in 1909-10 by Wylson and Long. The facade is three stories high with a structural attic above a modillioned cornice and entablature. In the center, there are three sash windows on two floors, framed by stone Renaissance surrounds. The ends of the building are designed as taller towers topped with leaded domes. A frieze at the attic level is inscribed with the words 'Palace Theatre', and the entrances are located under a flat canopy. Inside, the theatre has a lively atmosphere with Renaissance style plasterwork, two curved galleries, and stage boxes that are surrounded by pilasters and topped with broken segmental pediments. The proscenium arch is plain, with scrolled brackets in the upper corners, and there is an oval ceiling panel adorned with a decorative border.
