Description
Monmouth House is a substantial early to mid 17th century red brick house located on The Parade, built for R Carey, Earl of Monmouth, who died in 1639. The northern half of the building was entirely rebuilt in 1927 by H Colbeck to match the southern half, which had been heavily restored. The rebuilt sections used bricks from Cassiobury House. The house is three stories tall, featuring four coped gables with parapets between them. The first floor has eight windows, while the second floor has four windows. The windows are restored casements set in segment-arched openings, with three-light windows on the first floor and outer second floor openings, and four-light windows in the center. There is a brick string course between the first and second floors, and the ground floor has been modernized. The south end wall has two gables and two large chimney stacks, which are partially rebuilt. At the rear, there is a short 19th century wing.
Inside the older section, there is a much restored 17th century oak staircase with a moulded rail, turned balusters, and square newels. The entrance hall is panelled and features a key-blocked arched surround at the entry. On the second floor upper hall, there is a moulded oak fireplace. The roof structure includes tie-beam-end-collar trusses with queen struts, and some panelled doors can be found on this floor.
