Description
Nos 63 and 65 High Street is an 1889 bank building, originally the Bucks and Oxon Bank. It features a tall three-storey elevation made of brick and terracotta, which is now painted, showcasing free Gothic details. The front has four bays with a gable over the central two bays. The ground floor has an arcade of four-centred arches supported by foliate capped pilasters, with ornate moulding on the spandrels of the two central bays. The upper floors are arranged in a 1-2-1 pattern, with pilaster strips at the first floor and string courses running across. The first-floor windows have stilted concave corner heads and ornate hood moulds, while the second-floor windows feature moulded flat heads and festoon panels below. There is a pointed arch tympanum over the central pair of windows, adorned with decorative carving, linked hood moulds, and a carved panel in the spandrel between. A small lunette is positioned above. The gable is coped with kneelers and a finial, and features paired console brackets and dentil moulding. The outer bays have a parapet with a cornice on console brackets and large terminal console brackets. The building has a slate roof and moulded brick chimneys at the ends.
