Description
The Coach and Horses Public House is a public house located on the north side of High Street in Rickmansworth. It likely dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with extensions from the 18th century and a refronting in the 19th century. The building is probably timber-framed with a stock brick front and red brick returns, topped by a tiled roof. Originally consisting of two bays, it was extended to the right, possibly forming an open hall, and was floored and heated in the 17th century.
The façade features three windows, with the entrance located to the left of center and covered by a bracketed hood. The ground floor has broad sash windows with segmental heads, while the first floor has 32-light casements. Notable architectural details include white brick quoining, dentilled brick eaves, and a central ridge stack. There is a 17th-century external stack at the left end with a large base and a 19th-century cap, along with a tile-hung gable behind it. An extruded stack at the right end also has a large base.
At the rear left, there is a long outbuilding constructed of red brick and weatherboarded timber framing. A continuous outshut at the rear features a catslide roof. There are additional 20th-century flat-roofed single-storey additions that are not of special interest. Inside, the building contains a stop-chamfered ground floor binding beam and an inglenook fireplace.
