Description

The Chequers Restaurant is a house that has been converted into a restaurant. It likely dates back to the early 16th century, with flooring and heating added in the 17th century. The building was extended and its front was remodeled in the late 19th century. It features a timber frame with a whitewashed brick front and a tiled roof. Originally, it had a two-bay open hall and is now one storey with an attic. The central entrance has a key-blocked and moulded segmental head, which is similar to the large ground floor windows that have matching heads in their reveals. There are two half dormers with casements that are interrupted by a timber transom at the eaves level, and the gables are adorned with bargeboards. The building has dentilled brick eaves and a truncated stack on the right side, which was originally external. There is a 19th-century wing at the rear right that features dentilled eaves and a hipped roof, with some framing exposed at the back. Inside, there is evidence of an originally jettied front, a large inglenook fireplace, and a stop-chamfered ground floor binding beam. The interior also includes jowled posts, curved braces to cambered tie beams, and a queen strut clasped purlin roof with both curved and straight wind braces.
