Description

St. Joan of Arc's Convent High School is a house that has been converted into a school, dating from around 1720 to 1730. It is built of red brick with a tiled roof and features five bays across two storeys and an attic. The central entrance has a six-panelled door with panelled reveals, a moulded lintel and jambs, and an Ionic doorcase with engaged fluted columns and a pediment. The windows are glazing bar sashes set in shallow reveals with gauged brick flat arched heads, and there are nine-pane sashes in the attic. The building has a moulded brick plinth and cornice, topped with a stone coped parapet.

At the rear, there is another central entrance with panelled reveals and carved brackets supporting the hood, along with glazing bar sashes that have cambered heads. A canted bay was added to the right side in the 19th century. The left return is plain but has a projecting addition. Set back to the right are three-storey additions from 1929 that are not of special interest. Inside, there is an open well stair featuring carved cheek pieces, a moulded handrail, and renewed balusters. This building was formerly known as The Elms and was the home of the author George Eliot.
