Description
No. 6 Temple Gardens is a house built in 1937 by Connell, Ward and Lucas for H. Tanburn. It features reinforced concrete post and panel construction with a rendered finish and a flat roof, showcasing the International Modern Style. The building has two storeys, a roof deck, and a basement.
The entrance bay is slightly off centre and projects out, featuring a curved outer staircase with a hood above it. Glazed panels flank the door, and there is a completely glazed vertical upper stage measuring 3 by 7 feet for the stairs. The service end of the house is set back slightly to the left. The ground floor is elevated on pilotis, with part of the basement exposed. Long horizontal ranges of windows in steel frames are present, some with hoods or 'eyebrows'. The parapet is prominent, and there is a curved staircase on the left that returns at an angle. A round light is located immediately to the left of the entrance.
To the right, set well back, is the living room range with a garage below the ground floor, also on pilotis. This section has three square ground floor windows and continuous horizontal glazing on the first floor. The eaves project slightly, and there is an iron balcony on the roof, which has a curved shaped canopy that was originally open but is now closed with glass and aluminium panelling.
The garden front features a curved outer staircase to the right leading to a recess on the ground floor that is entirely glazed. There is a semi-circular cantilevered dining room projection to the right and railings on the balcony to the left. The first floor has continuous horizontal glazing with a hood above, and the curved canopy on the roof sweeps around to follow the plane of the garden front. A short block projects to the far right, containing two windows.
Inside, the house retains its original arrangement, with structural posts serving as features, one of which incorporates the flue from the fireplace.
