Description

Nos. 19 and 20 Batchworth Heath are two lodges that were originally the entrance gate and lodges to Moor Park, built around 1763-1765, likely by Robert Adam for Sir Laurence Dundas. They have been extended in the late 19th century. The buildings are constructed from Portland stone and rendered brick, topped with slate roofs, and are designed in a Neo-Classical style.

The monumental arch features engaged Roman Doric columns and an archivolt adorned with a lion mask key and a vermiculated soffit, with paterae in the spandrels. Reeded impost bands extend as a cornice to the half-height link walls connecting the lodges. The lodges themselves are square and single-storey, with plinths and cornices featuring reeded bands and blocking courses, topped with pyramidal roofs. The front and rear of the lodges have nine-pane sash windows, and the inner returns have architraved entrances with cornices. The side and rear walls are rendered.

On the park-facing elevation of the arch, the columns are fluted, and there is a carved wheatsheaf on the key. Both lodges have extensions, with one lodge featuring a single storey and a basement at the rear right, rendered and fitted with nine and twelve-pane sash windows. Attached to the rear of the right lodge is a low stone wall with capped piers.
