Description

The war memorial plaque was unveiled in 1920 by the Bishop of St Albans, Dr Michael Furse. It is a stone memorial comprising a rectangular tablet, supported by two small brackets, above which is a smaller rectangular tablet holding a cross with a shallow hood. The memorial is set into the front wall of the dwellings at 80 and 82 Sopwell Lane. The larger tablet is inscribed with the names of 15 individuals who lost their lives in the First World War. The inscription reads: ‘FOR REMEMBERANCE/ 1914-1918/JAMES BAKER RALPH HAYLES/ WILLIAM BEASLEY GEORGE HALSEY/ BERT EPHGRAVE CHARLES JAYCLEAU/ JOHN EPHGRAVE BERTRAM PARLES/ CHARLES FOUTAIN PERCY POPE/ HARRY CATELEY NOAH SWAIN/ JESSE CATELEY HERBERT WRIGHT/ WILLIAM WALDOCK/ RIP’. Note that the dwellings at 80 and 82 Sopwell Lane themselves are not considered to be of special architectural or historic interest.
