Description
The Goat Inn is a 16th-century timber-framed building located on Sopwell Lane. It features an overhanging upper storey and consists of two storeys and a basement. The façade has two windows, with an additional window on the first floor in an extension above the carriageway on the right. The roof is moderately pitched and tiled, likely added later than the main structure, and has a wood cornice with modillions. The first floor is plastered while the ground floor is made of brick, featuring a canted bay on the right side. The windows are either sash or casement with glazing bars, although some have been replaced. The carriageway arches are supported by shouldered brackets, and the walls of the carriageway display exposed timbers.
At the rear, there is an 18th-century extension made of red brick with random blue headers and a high-pitched tiled roof, which also has replaced windows. Inside, there are closely set studs and beams, including some that are carved, chamfered, and moulded. Although there have been significant alterations since the 16th century, much of the original building remains intact. Additionally, there are two long rear extensions, one likely contemporary with the original structure and the other from the 18th century.
