Description

Holt Farmhouse is a farmhouse that exemplifies a 2-unit house, with both parts likely dating to the 15th century. It underwent alterations in the 16th and 17th centuries and was extended at both ends in the late 19th century, resulting in a long range with a canted plan. The building features a timber frame with plastered walls and weatherboarded extensions, topped with plain tile roofs. It has one storey and attics. The larger unit is located on the northeast side and has three broad eaves gables; the left gable indicates the 15th-century cross wing, while the right two mark the former two-bay open hall. There is a 19th-century pentice addition on the front ground floor, and glazing bar casements are present throughout. At the right end of the range, where it joins the other unit, is a taller gabled block, likely a late 17th-century wing. The other unit consists of two to three bays and has two small attic casements. This unit also served as a former hall and features exposed joists and main beams of high quality on the first floor. Inside the larger unit, there is a screens partition between the cross wing and hall, with depressed four-centred doorheads. The inserted hall floor dates to around 1600 and includes chamfer-stopped beams and joists. The 19th-century wings at either end of the range each have two windows.
