Description
The Chequers is a house dating from the early to mid 16th century, with extensions added in the 17th century. It features a timber frame with rendered brick casing and some weatherboarding, topped by a tiled roof. The building has three bays, with the left bay likely being an original open hall, which was extended by two bays to the right that were floored and heated in the 17th century. It has one storey and an attic, with a central entrance that includes a later gabled porch.
On the ground floor, there are two sets of two-light flush frame timber casements, and two additional two-light casements are found in gabled dormers on the centre and left sides. The ridge of the left bay is slightly lower than the others, and the right bay is weatherboarded. There is a cross axial 17th-century stack with a rebuilt cap located where the two building phases meet. The left gable end displays an exposed frame with four large panels, a mid rail, a cambered tie beam, and struts to the collar clasping purlins, along with an inserted casement. The right gable end features an exposed truss.
At the rear, the early bay is partly weatherboarded and partly brick cased, with exposed studs beneath a long five-light casement. The 17th-century bays project further and include a three-light casement and a two-light gabled dormer. Attached to the right is a low outshut. The building was formerly a public house, and there is a 20th-century flat-roofed addition to the rear that is not of special interest.
