4/17 The Chequers

II

House. Early to mid C16, extended C17. Timber frame, rendered brick casing, part weatherboarded. Tiled roof. 3 bays, left bay probably an open hall originally, extended by 2 bays to right, floored and heated in C17. 1 storey and attic. Central entrance with later gabled porch. 2 ground floor 2 light flush frame timber casements. Two 2 light casements in gabled dormers to centre and left. Ridge of left bay slightly lower. Right bay is weatherboarded. Cross axial C17 stack with rebuilt cap where 2 builds meet. Left gable end has exposed frame, 4 large panels with mid rail, cambered tie beam, struts to collar clasping purlins, inserted casement. Right gable end has exposed truss. To rear early bay is part weatherboarded, part brick cased with exposed studs below a long 5 light casement. C17 bays project further, a 3 light casement, 2 light gabled dormer. Attached to right a low outshut. Formerly a public house. C20 flat roofed addition to rear not of special interest.
