Description
The kitchen garden walls and adjoining outbuilding at Rothamsted Manor House date from the mid-17th century, although the walling on the eastern side may be from the 16th century. The walls are constructed of red brick and stand about 3.5 meters high. The eastern and northern walls feature 17th-century flat buttresses on their inner faces. The western wall, built around 1900, has ornamental gables made of mauve brick, including three large gables with curved sides and triangular heads, as well as seven smaller gables with concave sides. Near the center of this wall are mid-17th-century gate posts topped with cut brick cornices, flanked by wrought iron gates from the 19th or 20th century. The western wall extends at the northern end into a 50-meter stretch of mid-17th-century wall. The outbuilding on the southeastern side is also from the mid-17th century, with 20th-century extensions, and likely served as a gardener's house. It features a plain tile roof with a broad gable end facing the garden.
