Description
Hammonds End House is a small country house built around 1700-1710. It features dark red brick with lighter red brick dressings and has a plain tile hipped roof. The house stands three storeys high over a cellar, with a five-window east elevation and a three-window north elevation, which was formerly the entrance front but now has a blocked door. There are floor bands and a deep wooden eaves cornice. On the north side, the cornice has mouldings below the eaves, and the door is adorned with richly carved scrolls, a figured keystone, and a segmental pedimented hood. The house has eight fielded panels, and the first and second-floor windows above the door have key blocks. All sides feature gauged brick lintels. The west elevation has a similar central door, but with simpler scrolls and hood, and a later glazed fan. The attic windows are original two-light mullioned casements, while other windows are 19th-century sashes or cross-bar casements. Notably, on the left ground floor of the west side, there are two oak cross-bar casements with leaded lights, and the first and second-floor central west windows have scalloped lintels.
Inside, the staircase hall is at right angles to the north entrance and features barleytwist balustrading with leaf scrolls on the treads. The first-floor landing has a well-crafted moulded arch leading to the north side rooms, which have original panelling. The ground floor rooms are decorated with fielded and bolection moulded panelling, and there is another principal room in the southwest angle. A service stair with good moulded balusters leads up to the attic, and there is a large inglenook in the kitchen.
