Description
Mackerye End Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, or possibly the late 16th century, with a mid-19th century gabled addition on the left front side. The building features a timber frame and combed pargetting, topped by a plain tile hipped roof. A large square red brick chimney stack is located near the left end. The rear elevation includes four 19th century glazing bar casements and three hipped casement dormers. There are two early 19th century doorcases with shaped brackets and pediment hoods. Lean-to additions from the 18th to 19th centuries on the rear left end enclose an early 18th century external chimney stack. Inside, there is a square central hall, and the room above features a notable bolection moulded fireplace from around 1700. The 19th century wing is made of colour-washed brick and has three glazing bar casements, along with a gabled porch that has an elliptical arch. The farmhouse has a literary association with Charles Lamb.
