Description

Old Beech Hyde and the adjoining barn is a house that dates from the late 15th century, with a cross wing added in the mid 17th century. The building is cased in red brick from the later 18th century and features a plain tile roof. The left side of the house has one storey and attics, while the right side has two storeys and an attic. The left section includes two windows and consists of a two-bay former open hall and a one-bay contemporary cross wing. The front of the house has three 18th-century leaded casement windows, each with four lights and segmental heads, along with two similar casements in gabled dormers on the left. There is a 20th-century timber frame tiled porch. The wing has a rebuilt attic and the left part features a plinth and floor band. An impressive external mid 17th-century chimney stack is located on the east wall of the wing, characterized by a tall base with a high plinth and shallow offsets, along with two diagonal-set shafts that have moulded bases and corbelled tops. The hall range has a stack of the same date, likely rebuilt from an earlier base, with four square shafts arranged in a cruciform plan. Inside, the bay next to the 17th-century wing has late 16th-century moulded floor beams and a clasped purlin roof above. The hall is separated from this bay by a smoke-blackened partition that abuts the east wall of an inserted stack. There is an unmoulded inserted floor beam in the west bay. The 17th-century wing features a good open staircase at the rear, with newels that have diamond finials. Circa 1980 extensions on the west connect with a 19th-century barn range to create an L-shaped plan.
