Description
Moat House Hotel is a hotel that was originally built as a large town house in the early 18th century, featuring a significant mid to late 17th century chimney stack on the left side. There are late 19th century additions at the front left and rear of the building. The main block is constructed of red brick with vitrified headers and has gauged red brick lintels. It has a plain tile hipped roof and stands three storeys tall, with six flush sash windows set in moulded frames and two floor bands. An impressive wooden doorcase is located towards the left, featuring a door with eight fielded panels in a moulded wood frame and a rectangular fanlight above. Fluted Corinthian pilasters support an enriched architrave that curves upwards at the center, topped with a broken segmental pediment adorned with enriched modillions and a vase relief in the tympanum, flanked by swags of fruit and flowers. The chimney stack, made of darker red brick, has an ovolo cornice near the top of its base. At the rear of the main block is a two-storey 18th century extension that is three windows wide. Behind this is a late 19th century range featuring a canted bay window, constructed of mauve brick with red lintels. A similar style extension is located at the front left, which has a gabled bay of casement windows facing south. The interior was modified in an open-plan Wren style in the late 19th or early 20th century, but the outer walls retain original fielded panelling. A large 18th century fireplace is located on the rear wall of the south ground floor room. The building was formerly known as Welcombe.
