Description
This is an early 19th-century pair of buildings, likely designed by George Smith, located on London Road. The buildings are two storeys high with a basement, each featuring two windows. They are constructed with flint walls and red brick dressings. The roof is hidden behind a parapet, which has four broad, shallow serrations corresponding with the apex of giant round-arched recesses, creating an arcaded front. These arches are detailed with red brick, brick pilasters, and stone impost blocks. The returns are also arcaded. All window and door openings are round-arched. The recessed sash windows have glazing bars, with Gothic interlaced bars at the heads. Similar Gothic glazing is found in the fanlights of the two doors, which have glazed upper sections, panelled pilasters, and cornice heads. The basement windows are square-headed and also have Gothic glazing. Number 176 has a one-storey, two-window extension to the left, with a weatherboarded rear, and Number 174 has a similar extension to the right.
