Description
This is a house, likely built in the mid to late 17th century, probably as a lodge and storehouse, and later altered in the late 17th century when it was converted entirely to residential use. Constructed from red brick, the building is of a square plan with a plain tile roof and parapeted gable ends on the north and south sides. It has two storeys and attics. A moulded brick floor band and cornice runs around the building; the bands were originally interrupted in the centre of the south side and in two places on the north side, presumably to accommodate hoist doors, but were remade in the late 17th century. A ridge chimney stack, possibly added in the late 17th century, is located near the north gable end. The front elevation has a central casement window on the ground, first, and attic floors; the first-floor window is original to the late 17th century and has three leaded lights. The west elevation features two 17th-century casement windows on both the ground and first floors, with three and four lights respectively. Inside, a two-storey newel staircase is located in the northwest corner. The east elevation includes a 17th-century lean-to extension and an exposed hoist beam below the eaves. The house was built in connection with the Fish Ponds of the Gorehambury estate.
