Description

The Parish Church of St Giles is a Grade II* listed building with origins dating back to the 12th century, featuring some fragments from the 13th century and a west tower from the 15th century. The church was restored in 1853 and is constructed of flint rubble with stone dressings, topped with plain tile pitched roofs, and a parapet on the nave. The west tower is three stages high and battlemented, with the upper two stages showcasing 15th-century details, including two-light belfry windows. A lead spike with a wrought iron weathervane adorns the tower. The west entrance is deeply recessed, with a three-light window positioned above it. The nave contains a restored 12th-century lancet window in the north wall, along with some 15th-century stonework in the square and four-centre arch windows. The remaining windows are in the style of the 14th century. The south porch was added in the 19th century. Inside, there is a large 15th-century arch leading from the west tower, supported by single attached shafts. The south nave arcade features columns resting on 13th-century octagonal bases. A restored 15th-century derestorey is present, alongside a Jacobean hexagonal pulpit with carved paneling. The south door includes iron scrollwork, possibly from the 12th century.
