Description

The Gables is a house dating from the 16th to 17th centuries, originally timber-framed. The walls are now plastered, and the roof is covered with steep plain tiles. It is two storeys high and has an L-shaped footprint. The left side features a projecting 17th-century gable end, where the upper floor juts out, supported by a dragon beam. A tarred red brick plinth runs along the base. The front features a single ground-floor window with 8/8 sashes and panelled shutters, and a three-light casement window on the first floor. The roof structure is of the clasped purlin type. The side elevation displays brick and half-timbering on the ground floor. The rear elevation is notable for a tall chimney stack, dating to the 16th or 17th centuries, built from flint and brick, with a polygonal shaft constructed from tile courses.
