Description
The George and Dragon Restaurant is a building that was formerly an inn, dating from the 16th century or earlier, with alterations and extensions from the 17th century. It features an exposed timber frame and has two storeys plus an attic, topped by a steep plain tile roof. The structure includes two jettied gable-ended cross wings on either side of a one-window centre. A 16th or 17th century red brick chimney stack is located near the right wing, with a base that has triangular arrises. The left wing exemplifies 16th century construction with closely set studs and curved braces supporting the first floor and attic. The remaining frontage is from the 17th century and includes a broad gabled attic dormer in the centre. The right wing has a clasped purlin roof, and there are 20th century glazing bars throughout. The ground floor features four canted and square window bays, and there is a 20th century rear extension. This building is a very important feature in the centre of the village.
