Description

The Bury is a house that has been converted into sheltered housing for elderly people. It was built soon after 1659 and is constructed of red brick in a double pile design. The building features machine tile hipped roofs behind an 18th-century parapet and has a square plan with three storeys above a basement. There are floor bands and aluminium sash windows, with three on each elevation. The southwest front includes arched brick panels in the lower storeys and a two-storeyed pilastered centrepiece featuring Doric and Ionic orders on pedestals, with niches in the outer bays. The top entablature has a pediment and ball finials. A late 18th-century doorcase is adorned with a pulvinated frieze and a dentilled cornice. The roof is topped with two tall red brick chimney stacks that have grouped square shafts. There are lobby entrances to the ground floor in the centre bays on the northwest and southeast sides. The interior is exceptionally well-preserved, featuring a large open-well staircase with tapering fluted balusters and pendant newels that have fretwork arch heads. A similar arch is present in the front lobby. Original oak doors on the first and second floors have ovolo-moulded rails and muntins. The ground floor rooms have replacement panelling and exposed ceiling beams. There are large rear extensions added around 1978.
