Description

The granary and two adjoining barns at Wellhead Farm date from the 17th and 18th centuries. The eastern barn is from the mid-17th century, the granary on the west is from the early 18th century, and the middle barn, which links the two earlier buildings, is from the 18th century. The structures feature timber frames resting on red brick sills, with the granary having a red brick ground floor and dark weatherboarding. They are topped with steep old red tile roofs at the rear facing the road, although some roofs on the yard side have corrugated sheeting. There is some red brick infill on the yard side of the barns.

At the entrance to the yard, there is a two-storey square building that provides access to the granary via a ladder on the south side, above a brick stable with a stable door on the west. The tall four-bay eastern barn has an entrance in the second bay from the north leading to the yard. This barn features heavy jowled posts with long straight braces connecting to the wall plates and tie beams. It has a clasped purlin roof with one purlin on each slope and heavy inclined queen posts that are wider at their upper ends where they connect to the principal and hold the purlin in a notch. The barn also displays face-halved bladed scarf joints over the post heads. The lower middle barn has a gabled projecting porch on the south side leading to the yard and features a very steep roof. It has unjowled posts and a clasped-purlin roof supported by trusses with collars.
