Description
The barn at Maydencroft Manor is a late 16th-century structure with brick infill added around 1700. It features a timber frame set on a flint sill, which has been repaired with red brick and tile pinnings. The exposed frame is filled with narrow red brick that includes staggered soldier courses and ventilation gaps. The barn has a steep old red tile roof and consists of five bays, located on the west side of the farmyard at the entrance to the property, facing east.
A projecting gabled porch is centrally positioned at the eastern end, and there is an original rear aisle. The barn's construction includes step-jowled posts, unjowled mid-bay posts, straight tension braces above the rail, and long curved braces to the tie-beams. The trusses feature a collar at mid-height with two inclined queen-struts supporting heavy convex curved inclined queen posts, which clasp the upper purlin. Long straight wind-braces are present in the middle and end bays, and the rafters are jointed into the lower butt-purlin.
The structure includes an edge-halved scarf joint with bridled butts and a large face peg in the rear arcade plate, along with long cross curved braces to the arcade plate. Aisle-ties and aisle-purlins are supported by aisle-collars, and passing braces from the aisle wall-posts are trenched through the side of the arcade post and face-notched onto the tie-beam. There is a pigeon loft in the roof of the porch, large double doors leading into the porch, and a small door in the end bays. Curved braces are found at the mid-height rails in the side walls of the porch, while the rear wall is faced in red brick. It is noted that John Bunyan is said to have preached in this barn.
