Description

This is a house, now divided into two separate dwellings. The core of the building dates back to the 16th century, originally an open hall house, with a two-story crosswing added to the east in the 17th century. The western part of the house was substantially rebuilt during the 17th century as well. The construction is timber-framed, with brick sills, and the timber frame is visible, set within plastered panels. The western portion has a roughcast exterior. The roof is covered with steep-pitched old red tiles. The house, of a T-shaped plan, is set back from the road facing north, with the eastern wing projecting forward and extended to the east by a catslide roofed outshut. The western part is narrower and lower. A projecting gabled porch sits in the angle between the wings, and a rear entrance marks the cross-entry point. A substantial chimney shaft rises to the rear of the roof ridge, featuring an elongated cruciform design. The windows are flush casements. The hall range displays wide-panel framing. Prominent curved tension braces are exposed in the gables of the crosswing. Internally, the hall features jowled posts, cranked tension braces dividing the hall from the partition, long straight tension braces against the hall walls, and curved wind-braces supporting the clasped-purlin roof. A floor is supported over the hall by an axial beam.
