Description
Tichney is a house located in Sandon Green, dating from the early to mid 16th century. It was floored, heated, and extended in the 17th century, with further alterations and extensions made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features a largely exposed timber frame with rendered infill and a thatched roof. It has a two-bay open hall that is now one storey with an attic, alongside a two-storey cross wing. A gabled entrance porch has been added where the hall meets the wing. The windows include 20th-century flush frame casements, some with leaded lights, a gabled dormer, and a two-light window on the first floor of the hall. The exposed panel framing is a notable feature. To the left of the wing, there is an extension with later framing of smaller scantling, and further rendered additions to the left. The cross wing has a hip roof at the front and a taller ridge than the hall. There is a stack to the left of the cross wing, originally external but rebuilt, and another stack to the right bay of the hall behind the ridge. The rear of the cross wing is jettied, supported by curved brackets, with curved passing tension braces on both floors. At the left end of the hall, there is a pointed arched headed door.
