Description

Sparrow Hall is a house dating to the late 16th century, situated in Twinstead Green. It is timber-framed and rendered, with gabled peg tile roofs. The building is of two storeys, with attics over part. The plan is composed of a large, wide crosswing, an entry staircase and stack bay, and a lower block to the east. The stair tower has its own gabled roof, set at a right angle to the crosswing.

A prominent contemporary stack, central to the design, features a tall base and four octagonal shafts from the original construction. This stack serves large fireplaces: on the ground floor, a lintelled opening leads to the hall, and an arched opening opens into the crosswing. The room above the stack has a smaller, arched and chamfered fireplace with stone facing. The newel staircase remains largely original, with complete door openings leading into the crosswing and into a 'baffle' lobby. The storey posts in the crosswing have moulded corbels and chamfering. Windows are leaded light casements; one retains original ovolo mullions, and another dates to the 17th century. Several old doors originate from Pelhams Hall. Minor extensions with peg tile roofs have been added to the east end.
