Description

House. Dating to the last quarter of the 16th century, or possibly earlier, Catley Cross House is a timber-framed building with red brick infill, now plastered. It has a plaintiled roof with two plastered brick chimneystacks, the main range stack having attached shafts. The house comprises an in-line hall and service end, along with a two-storey cross wing to the left. The fenestration includes square leaded casements, with some 17th-century iron-leaded windows. A tiled gabled porch, supported on brackets, is situated on the right, featuring a vertically boarded door.

The timber frame is of good quality, exhibiting jowled storey posts and straight internal trenched bracing with face halved and bladed scars to wall plates. Evidence suggests a diamond mullioned window once existed in the side wall of the cross wing, and one survives in the ground floor rear wall. The hall fireplace is an original inglenook. The interior features chamfered floor joists housed with soffit tenons, diminishing haunches into a moulded axial bridging joist. The undershot cross passage retains its original openings to the hall, service room, and stairs, which are original solid treads on bearers. External door openings remain in their original positions. A stud partition between the service rooms is still present, with some wattle and daub removed to create high-level openings. A room above the hall is accessed from the cross wing, with the doorway framed into the roof structure. Only dormer windows are evident externally, and these may be original. The roof structure is a paired rafter design with clasped side purlins and wind braces.

Catley Cross House is listed at Grade II* due to its remarkable survival in an extremely complete state, incorporating many rare features.
