Description

Number 31, which includes a carriage entrance on the east, is a late 18th century red brick front that belongs to a house originally built in the 16th or 17th century. The building features a steeply pitched tiled roof that is set behind a parapet and a cornice made of dentil and moulded brickwork. It has two storeys with a slight central projection. The ground floor has a glazed door set in a fielded panelled reveal, surrounded by Doric pilasters, an entablature, and a pediment. On either side of the door are two wide Neo-Georgian shop windows. The first floor has three 1:1:1 sash windows with glazing bars, set in reveals under flat arches.

To the left, there is a narrow wing that has exposed timber framework. The ground floor features a carriageway, while the first floor oversails on exposed corbels, with plaster infilling between closely spaced posts and a flush two-light lattice casement window. The steeply pitched old tiled roof has a carved cornice. The gates of the carriageway are carved at the top with the initials S (for the surname of the owner) and D E (for the Christian names of the owner and his wife), along with the date 1632.

This building is part of a group that includes Nos 1, 1B, 3, 5, 7, 17, 19, 23, 31, 31A, 33, 33A, 35, and 43 to 57.
